The SG-2 Flight Simulator

One simulator with three configurations: two FAA-approved training devices and a custom setup for aircraft the FAA hasn't reviewed.

The SG-2 simulator

FAA-Approved Advanced Aviation Training Device

SG-2A (AATD)

A Cessna 172S G1000 simulator with accurate avionics and real knobs and buttons. With it you get:

  • Realistic C172S flight model
  • Legacy and NXi G1000 emulation
  • Up to 20 hours toward Instrument Rating
  • Up to 50 hours toward Commercial Certificate
  • Use for CFI and CFII training
  • Use for Instrument Proficiency Checks (IPCs) and instrument currency

Choose the SG-2A for the highest FAA credit toward your ratings.

SG-2B BATD flight simulator cockpit

FAA-Approved Basic Aviation Training Device

SG-2B (BATD)

Set it up to match your own aircraft, with 35 FAA-approved panel combinations across the Cessna 172S, PA-28, and PA-28R. Loggable time includes:

  • 2.5 hours toward Private Pilot
  • 10 hours toward Instrument Rating
  • Use for instrument currency and holding procedures

Choose the SG-2B if you want to train on the same avionics you fly with in your own airplane.

Pilot training on the SG-2C Boeing 737-800 configuration

Custom Non-Approved Configuration

SG-2C (Custom add-on options)

The SG-2 becomes the SG-2C when you add aircraft the FAA hasn't reviewed. It comes with the Beechcraft Baron 58, Cirrus SR-22, and Cirrus Vision Jet, plus a library of over 800 instruments. Add-on options:

  • Jet trainer (Boeing 737-800): a working automation panel and FMS for practicing CRM, flight modes, routes, performance data, and approaches. Used in our jet transition course.
  • Custom aircraft: model a specific airplane, replicate your fleet, or learn new avionics. Availability varies by type and license, so ask us about specific models.

Note: The SG-2C, including the 737-800, is not FAA-approved for logging time, approaches, type rating training, or currency. It is a training aid only.

BATD vs. AATD Loggable Hours

Key Features

Simulator Advantages

  • Feel there: Every configuration has force-feedback controls that adjust to the aircraft you're flying, so it handles like the real thing
  • Train using your aircraft and avionics: The SG-2 simulates everything from light piston planes to business jets and airliners, on wraparound screens
  • EFB connectivity: Link the SG-2 with any EFB app, including ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot, for realistic flight planning and navigation practice
  • Online ATC and live traffic: Fly with online air traffic control and real-world traffic over 4K scenery
  • Make training count: The SG-2B has 35 FAA-approved aircraft and panel combinations you can use to log time and stay current
  • Instructor station: The instructor controls every part of the training environment, so each session can focus on what the student needs to work on

Your training calendar has a weather problem. The sim doesn't.

Maryland sits in one of the most weather-disrupted flight training corridors on the East Coast. Humidity, fog, thunderstorms, and winter ice don't care about your schedule. Here's what that actually costs a student pilot in this area.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How exactly does simulator training reduce the total cost of a pilot's license?
Simulator training reduces costs by replacing expensive aircraft hours with more affordable, focused simulator time. For example, you can master complex procedures without paying for fuel, transit time to a practice area, or weather delays. You can see a detailed flight training simulator cost comparison on our advantages page.
Can I really learn faster with flight simulator training compared to only using an airplane?
Yes. Our simulators allow for instant repetition and focused practice on specific skills, like instrument approaches or emergency procedures. This learning density is much higher than in an aircraft, where time is spent on ground taxiing or flying to practice areas. This is a big part of how we build the simulator into every program, and it helps you get proficient faster.
What's the financial advantage of using an FAA approved flight simulator for instrument currency?
Maintaining instrument currency in an aircraft can be costly due to rental fees, fuel, and instructor time. With our FAA-approved simulator, you can log the approaches, holds and course tracking you need at a fraction of the cost, on your own schedule, and without weather concerns. Explore the advantages of simulator training for pilots to see how much you can save.
How does local Maryland weather impact flight training timelines?
Maryland weather can cause real delays, with over 110 days of precipitation a year. At many schools that means cancelled lessons, broken momentum and months added to your training. We don't cancel lessons: when the weather or an airplane says no, your lesson moves to the simulator or ground instruction. That's a big part of how we help pilots save money on pilot lessons.
Beyond hourly rates, how does simulator training make getting a license more affordable?
It makes your expensive aircraft time more effective. By mastering maneuvers, procedures, and avionics in the simulator first, you spend less time in the airplane practicing and more time demonstrating proficiency. This reduces the total number of aircraft hours needed, which is the biggest factor in the overall cost of a private pilot license.
